The
primary mission of Pro Bono Students Canada (PBSC) is to provide critical, free legal services to
communities and individuals in need. Law student volunteers from all years
of study are matched with public interest organizations, community groups,
government agencies, and pro bono
lawyers. Projects include research,
drafting papers, public legal education, and the provision of legal information.
PBSC originated at the Faculty of Law at the
University of Toronto in 1996 where the PBSC National Office is currently
located. The National Office provides support and training for
PBSC branches at law schools across Canada.
The program was launched at the University of British Columbia in 1998
with two main goal. Our goals are to educate and instill a pro bono ethic in
future lawyers, and to serve communities in need.

The format of our program is simple – match law students with public
interest and community organizations that are in need of legal and law-related
services. The organizations we work with have a significant impact on providing legal services to vulnerable populations.
A key aspect of the program, which has resulted in a unique connection among
law students, the community and the profession, is that every student project
is supervised by a lawyer.
Today there are PBSC Chapters at EVERY law school across Canada and PBSC is
the world's only national pro bono student organization.
